home-news-3OHM looks to capitalize on increasing interest in E-bikes overseas

VANCOUVER, B.C., CANADA – OHM Cycles has expanded its marketing efforts into Europe, looking to capitalize on the continent’s increasing consumer interest in power-assisted bicycles, announced OHM Cycles President Michael DeVisser.

“As electric power-assist bikes gain in popularity in North America, they are even more popular in Europe,” DeVisser said. “At a recent worldwide bike conference in Brussels, it was reported that one out of every 10 bicycles sold in Europe has power-assist . We’re looking to tap into that market.”

OHM has established dealers in Spain, Germany, Ireland, and Italy. Enthusiasm for the product in Europe mirrors the positive response OHM electric bikes have earned in the U.S. and Canada.

“This Spring-Summer 2009 is our first season selling OHM electric bikes,” said Luciano Cicloone,of CICLOONE, an E-bike distributor in Pianezza, Italy (outside Torino). “We chose OHM Cycles because of the quality of components and the high technology used. OHM electric bicycles are designed for very demanding customers, from which we are receiving very positive feedback both as performance and as a general satisfaction of the product.” www.cicloone.it

An OHM Cycles hybrid electric-assist bike is just like a standard bike, but one energized by an electric motor integrated into the rear wheel. An enclosed rechargeable lithium-ion power pack straddles the top tube. Atop the handlebar, a micro-chipped control module choreographs the symphony of human and e-power – automatically adding a pedaling boost. The more effort the rider gives, the more boost the electric motor provides.

OHM Cycles 2009 product line up includes five models: Urban XU450, XU500 and XU700 and Sport XS700 and XS750. The Urban models are ideal for in-city commuting, featuring a lightweight aluminum frame, front suspension, and upright position for a more comfortable ride. The Sport also utilizes high-performance components — plus a more powerful motor and all-terrain tires.
At the core of the OHM Cycles’ electric bikes is the BionX motor, a brushless direct current generative wheel motor capable of peak power output of 700 Watts (450 Watts for the 250 Watt series motor). The silent motor features a microprocessor that calculates rider thrust and compensates for the weakest leg to ensure a smooth ride. Range is 20-75 miles (32-120 km). OHM electric bikes have caught the attention of the mainstream media, too, with positive reviews in the Wall Street Journal, Wired magazine, AutoWeek and the Vancouver Sun.

City Slick – Hybrid Electric Bikes from OHM Cycles, Green, Efficient Urban Travel

Friday, May 1st, 2009

XU700-front-smallOHM electric bikes make traveling around urban landscapes a fun, green experience; bikes integrate human power with an electric motor assist

VANCOUVER, B.C., CANADA– Looking for an innovative, green mode of transport to get around your favorite metropolitan area – one that doesn’t involve a car the size of a shoe box, the belch of biodiesel, or bus fare?   If so, you’re a candidate to climb aboard a hybrid electric-assist bike from OHM Cycles.

An OHM Cycles hybrid electric-assist bike is just like a standard bike, but one energized by an electric motor integrated into the rear wheel.  An enclosed rechargeable lithium-ion power pack straddles the top tube.  Atop the handlebar, a micro-chipped control module choreographs the symphony of human and e-power.  The result?  A bike that automatically adds a pedaling boost – the more grunt the rider gives, the more boost the electric motor provides.

“In many big cities of the world, electric-assist bicycles are common place, but in a very rudimentary form,” explained Michael DeVisser, president and founder of OHM Cycles Ltd., who lived in Asia and saw firsthand the potential of electric-assist bicycles as an efficient mode of city transportation.  “We took the latest cycling technology and created what we feel is the ideal electric-powered bike for urban travel.”

OHM Cycles can be ridden as a conventional bicycle or with pedal assist from the intelligent drive system.  With its lightweight components and customized power system, an OHM e-bike will send the rider racing up hills and around the city with ease.  Range is 20-75 miles.  OHM bikes have caught the attention of the mainstream media, too, with positive reviews in the Wall Street Journal, Wired magazine, AutoWeek and the Vancouver Sun.

At the core of the OHM Cycles’ bikes is the BionX motor, a brushless direct current generative wheel motor capable of peak power output of 700 Watts (450 Watts for the 250 Watt series motor).  The silent motor features a microprocessor that calculates rider thrust and compensates for the weakest leg to ensure a smooth ride.

Key features of the BionX motor include:

Brushless and gearless design requiring no maintenance.

Four power modes, with the motor compensating pedaling power by 25 – 300 percent, depending on the power level selected.

Four generative modes – the battery can be recharged at four strength levels when riding, braking or going downhill.

Magnetic-field-drive technology works with no friction or wear inside the motor. In testing, the motor has covered 45,000 miles of operation with zero maintenance required.

Completely sealed hub is impervious to rain and snow.

Thermal protection to prevent overheating.

OHM Cycles’ 2009 models feature four power packs, each designed to offer optimum power and range for every riding application. All OHM Urban and Sport models combine the BionX drive technology with a Molicel® Rechargeable Li-ion cell power pack.

Key features for 2009 also include:

4 Power packs available – 25 to 70 miles per charge with custom OHM Quick Connect system to easily remove and recharge

Fast Recharge – 90% capacity in 20 minutes, fully charge in 3 hours, charge over 500 times without loss of capacity

Intelligent Sensor – Patented BionX torque sensor automatically responds to the rider’s pedaling force and provides a smooth natural sensation

Suntour® Suspension seat post for a more comfortable ride

Adjustable stem and handlebars to customize riding position

Topeak® rear carry rack with QuickTrack™ MTX

“We wanted to make the most versatile hybrid e-bike on the market,” DeVisser said, “and we’re confident we have achieved that goal.  As the leader in electric cycling, OHM Cycles has created bicycles that match technical innovation with environmental concerns.”

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL reviews OHM Electric-assist bicycles

WSJ’s David Patton puts OHM Cycle’s new electric-assist hybrid bicycle to the test. Riding the OHM XU450, he challenges colleague Reed Albergotti, an amateaur cyclist with a Ridley Noah, up what he calls “heartbreak hill.”

See the Man vs. Machine race.

David Patton writes, “Bottom line: The OHM and other electric bikes are decent on short commutes in place of owning a second car to take to the train station. And any bike gives the extra benefit of a little exercise, too.”

San Fran Commute

Ohm Bike Model: XS700

San Fran Commute

Total Time (h:m:s): 30 mins

Distance (mi/km): 10 mi

Elevation Gain (ft/m): 500 ft

About a year ago I sold my car and upgraded to an OHM. I was at the point where living in an Urban city, with no parking and parking tickets galore, it was just not worth the hassle to own a vehicle.

Living in a city such as San Francisco where public transportation takes forever and hills are rampant, the OHM was a perfect fit. It was the best move I ever made.

I am a commuter that needs to transport a heavy laptop, gym clothes, and a purse everyday.

Luckily this is not a problem as I can attach two bags to the rack on the rear of the bike and I am all set to go!!!

My daily commute can take anywhere from ten to fifteen minutes, depending on how much power assistance I feel is needed at the moment.

In a car this ride would take me 20 minutes during rush hour, plus time to find parking.

When I made the decision to get rid of my car, and get a bike, the OHM was the only choice. I needed to find a solution that could get me around the SF hills and not affect my day to day routine.

The bike is extremely versatile, some days I will throttle my way into work with a dress and heels on, the next day I will peddle the whole way in with jeans on. I will take it across town to a palates class, to dinner with a friend and back home. That weekend I will take it on a bike ride across the Golden Gate bridge and into the mountains.

I have saved thousands of dollars by riding an OHM, not to mention helping out the environment.

OHM Electric Bike

Ohm Bike Model: XU450

OHM Electric Bike

I’ve owned an OHM XU450 bike since last December. I’ve now ridden the bike about 2600 miles – about 250 miles/month – and everything still feels like new.

All in all it’s been a good experience. I wanted to ditch my Bimmer for going to work, and to get a bit of exercise when going home, which is all uphill. (I live in the hilly part of Irvine, California.) These objectives have been met. On a few recreational trips I’ve taken I got from the battery about 40 miles, which included quite a bit of up-and-down hill portions. I can’t tell if the regeneration bit works.

Going home is all uphill. This is where I enjoy passing the many amateur cyclists in full Lycra jersey riding carbon fiber bikes. I wish I could see their faces while being passed by an old guy on a heavy black bike. (Of course I cheat!)
