THE WALL STREET JOURNAL reviews OHM Electric-assist bicycles

WSJ’s David Patton puts OHM Cycle’s new electric-assist hybrid bicycle to the test. Riding the OHM XU450, he challenges colleague Reed Albergotti, an amateaur cyclist with a Ridley Noah, up what he calls “heartbreak hill.”

See the Man vs. Machine race.

David Patton writes, “Bottom line: The OHM and other electric bikes are decent on short commutes in place of owning a second car to take to the train station. And any bike gives the extra benefit of a little exercise, too.”

VANCOUVER, B.C., CANADA, February 23, 2009 – OHM Cycles announced today its next generation of hybrid electric-assist bicycles for 2009. Four Power packs are now available, each designed to offer optimum Power and Range for every riding application. The OHM Urban and Sport hybrid bicycles are a comprehensive solution for eco-friendly mobility, said OHM Cycles President Michael DeVisser.

Combining BionX drive technology with Molicel® Rechargeable Li-ion cells, the OHM hybrid e-bikes are the first electric bicycles purpose-built for the North American market.

“OHM Cycles has a commitment to developing safe, unique products that are redefining cycling for commuters and recreational cyclists,” DeVisser explained. “OHM Cycles deliver an extended riding range thanks to its integrated OHM Power pack and BionX Power Hub. We feel that OHM bikes are a superior example of the evolution of cycling and power-assist technology.”

OHM Cycles can be ridden as a conventional bicycle or with pedal assist from the intelligent drive system. Features for 2009

For 2009, special improvements have been made to the OHM bicycles for easier operation and more comfortable riding:

4 Power packs available – 25 to 70 miles per charge with custom OHM Quick Connect system to easily remove and recharge

Fast Recharge – 90% capacity in 20 minutes, fully charge in 3 hours, charge over 500 times without loss of capacity

Intelligent Sensor – Patented BionX torque sensor automatically responds to the way the rider pedals and provides a smooth natural sensation

Suntour® Suspension seat post for a more comfortable ride

Adjustable stem and handlebars to customize riding position

“We wanted to make the most versatile hybrid e-bike on the market,” DeVisser said, “and we’re confident we have achieved that goal. As the leader in electric cycling, OHM Cycles has created bicycles that match technical innovation with environmental concerns.”

Clean Green Transportation

Expanding the bicycle network is an important step to support a clean, green and healthy mode of transportation. OHM bikes produce zero emissions during operation. Each Power pack consumes about one kilowatt-hour of energy while recharging.

OHM Cycles Charges into 2009 with Exciting New Hybrid Electric-Assist Bikes

Revised battery packs, new Shimano drivetrains, and custom component packages make OHM’s hybrid e-bikes the perfect choice for eco-friendly commuters and recreational cyclists

VANCOUVER, B.C., CANADA, September 22, 2008 – OHM Cycles will introduce its improved and refined 2009 product line of hybrid, electric-assist bicycles at the Interbike International Bicycle Expo, September 24‑26, at the Sands Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The new OHM Cycles bikes are a comprehensive solution to eco-friendly mobility, says company president and co-founder Michael DeVisser.

OHM electric bicycles will be available for test ride at Interbike Outdoor Demo, booth #D2057 on September 22-23. Then view indoor display, booth #2859, at the Interbike Bicycle Expo, September 24-26. Editors and interested dealers are encouraged to stop by the booth and see the bikes up close.

Since their debut in 2007, OHM Cycles electric-assist bikes have allowed riders to climb hills faster and ride longer – thanks to an integrated BionX intelligent energy management system. Through a combination of sensors and rider-supplied power, OHM electric bicycles respond to the way the rider pedals and provide a smooth natural sensation.

“OHM is committed to developing safe, high-quality, power-assist bicycles,” explained DeVisser. “We feel that OHM’s new Urban and Sport electric bicycles will help re-define personal mobility. We have worked closely with BionX and Molicel to integrate functionality and innovative design, resulting in a package with excellent performance.”

For 2009, OHM Cycles will offer four models, the XU450 and XU700 urban electric bikes, and the XS700 and XS750 sport models. Here’s what’s new for 2009:

Versatile, Improved Battery Pack Design

The city-friendly Urban XU450 will now feature a portable, Step-through battery pack design that utilizes an internal vibration resistant cartridge system, equipped with 28-volt/9-amp hour battery pack. The Urban XU450 is also available with Sport container with extended range 28-volt/12-amp hour battery pack.

Improved battery packs will also be standard on OHM’s 2009 Urban XU700, Sport XS700 and Sport XS750 models. Each will be equipped with the new Sport battery pack with convenient carrying handle – accommodating three different size batteries – 28-volt/12-amp hour, 38-volt/9-amp hour or 38-volt/12-amp hour battery configurations.

Most notably, all the new OHM battery packs allow for faster charging – three hours to charge at a 110/220 volt outlet – by means of Molicel© Advanced Battery Charger.

Revised Shimano Drivetrain

OHM Urban XU700, Sport XS700 and Sport XS750 will also benefit from new Shimano Deore drivetrains with RAPIDFIRE Plus shifters for easier shifting and 48T x 27T gearing to improve over-the-road performance.

New Cargo Rack

All four OHM electric bicycle models will come standard with the Topeak® Explorer. This bolt-on rack features a solid fender top, light mounts, and is compatible with Topeak’s Pannier and TrunkBag packs.

Clean, Green Transportation

Since OHM bicycles are electrically powered, they produce zero emissions during operation. Powered by Molicel© lithium-ion batteries, OHM bicycles typically take three hours to charge at a 110/220 volt outlet and consume about one kilowatt hour of energy while recharging. A rider can travel power-assisted for up to 148 km (90 miles) on one battery charge – four to five times more energy efficient than a motorcycle or scooter.

OHM Cycles Growth Plans Lead to Dealer Expansion in North America

Hybrid electric-assist bike company looks to build its growing dealer network

VANCOUVER, B.C., CANADA, June 16, 2008 – OHM Cycles Ltd., an innovative maker of hybrid electric-assist bicycles, announced today plans to expand its nationwide network of authorized dealerships in 2008, reports Michael DeVisser, president and founder of OHM Cycles.

“We anticipate significant sales growth in 2008 and are seeking quality dealer partners across Canada and the US,” DeVisser said. “Interest in our bikes has been growing and we’ve already received dozens of dealer inquiries.”

As a part of OHM’s growing distribution, network dealers enjoy trade advertising and marketing support. There are currently 12 Authorized OHM Dealerships in Canada and the United States.

OHM Cycles electric-assist bikes are based on a standard bike wheel base, with a center mount battery pack to provide better balance and maneuverability. The technology incorporates a simple control console, microchip processor, long-life rechargeable lithium-ion battery and a brushless electric motor integrated into the hub of the rear wheel. The system automatically manages power distribution during pedaling – the more effort the rider exerts, the more boost the electric motor provides. They can travel up to 146 km (91 mi) power assisted on a single charge and require virtually no maintenance.

Because of their versatility, the OHM bikes have attracted a diverse consumer base that includes urban commuters and recreational riders. Target commercial markets include resorts, tour operators, rental applications, colleges and universities, warehousing facilities and police/security departments.

OHM Cycles 2008 product line-up includes four models: the Urban XU450 and XU700 and the Sport XS700 and XS750. The Urban is ideal for in-city commuting, featuring a lightweight aluminum frame, front suspension, and upright position for a more comfortable ride. The Sport also utilizes high-performance components – plus a more powerful motor and all-terrain tires.

OHM Cycles – Unique, Innovative, Power-on-Demand, Electric–Assist Bicycles

Monday, April 7th, 2008

A “hybrid” bike that integrates human power with an electric motor assist for increased range and performance for commuter and recreational cyclists

April 7, 2008. VANCOUVER, B.C., Canada – A hybrid bicycle? Yes, indeed.

OHM Cycles product line of innovative electric-assist bicycles lets riders climb hills faster and ride longer – thanks to an integrated, intelligent energy management system that seamlessly weds the cyclist’s human power with that of an electric motor.

The design is based on a standard bike wheel base, with a center mount battery pack to provide better balance and maneuverability. The technology incorporates a simple control console, microchip processor, long-life rechargeable lithium-ion battery and a brushless electric motor integrated into the hub of the rear wheel. The system automatically manages power distribution during pedaling – the more effort the rider exerts, the more boost the electric motor provides.

“In many parts of the world, electric-assist bicycles are common place, but in a very rudimentary form,” explained Michael DeVisser, president and founder of OHM Cycles Ltd., who lived in Asia and saw firsthand the potential of electric-assist bicycles as an efficient mode of city transportation. “We took the latest cycling technology and integrated it with the newest brushless motor design from BionX, and created what we feel is an outstanding electric-powered bike.”

OHM Cycles 2008 product line-up includes four models: the Urban XU450 and XU700 and the Sport XS700 and XS750. The Urban is ideal for in-city commuting, featuring a lightweight aluminum frame, front suspension, and upright position for a more comfortable ride. The Sport also utilizes high-performance components — plus a more powerful motor and all-terrain tires.

The heart of each OHM model is the Intelligent Energy Management System, comprised of the BionX microchip-controlled brushless electric motor integrated into the rear wheel, the command console, and the battery and charger.

BionX Motor

The BionX motor is a brushless direct current generative wheel motor capable of peak power output of 700 Watts (450 Watts for the 250 Watt series motor). The silent motor features a microprocessor that calculates rider thrust and compensates for the weakest leg to ensure a smooth ride.

Command Console

In a single screen, with simple controls, the BionX command console displays important travel information and allows the rider to easily switch between different power modes. The command console contains a two-mode microprocessor that monitors and instantly displays information while riding.

In assistance mode, the display indicates the power supplied by the battery. In generative mode, the display indicates the energy transmitted to the battery. The battery charge indicator helps you manage the battery charge and lets you save energy for the return trip.

Security is also built into the system. The command console includes an alarm system with a 4 digit PIN. If the bicycle is moved while the alarm system is activated, the motor will instantly go into generative mode 4 and the alarm will sound.

An OHM bicycle’s maximum speed in power mode is programmable and can be adapted to the local regulations of any country.

Molicel® Rechargeable Battery

Whether it’s an OHM bicycle or a hybrid car, battery charging and life are critical factors. OHM bicycles use an E-One Moli Energy (Canada) Ltd’s Lithium-ion battery pack to deliver the safest and highest power of any electric bike battery on the market. With advanced protection, performance, and convenience, Li-ion batteries charge quickly and maintain steady power output throughout their lifespan. The e-bike battery packs are specifically configured to work with the BionX motor for optimum range and performance.

The system also includes a “smart” charger that charges the battery in approximately three hours. Lithium-ion batteries do not retain memory and maintain steady performance during their lifespan.

For all its sophisticated technology, an OHM bicycle is still a bike, which means it operates like a normal bike, albeit one with a unique reservoir of power. With the simple press of a button, riders can boost their pedaling power and performance. On an OHM bike, riders can climb steep hills faster and easier, get a better workout, reduce commuting time, even keep pace with stronger riders.
